The story of King David and his prophet Nathan is an example for an important truth: No man can declare God’s forgiveness to himself. It always takes a Christian brother or sister to do that. One reaons is that the brother or sister must make a judgment of the truth of the sinner’s repentance. A man declaring that God has forgiven him fools himself. Dietrich Bonhoeffer called for a restauration of confessions in the protestant church. He was right.
