The kindness of the Lord (26): renewing a commitment

I read this right before reading your article:

But we must observe that Paul was not ashamed to confess how gravely he had sinned against God, so long as it resulted in the glory of Christ. It was certainly a shameful thing to him that, carried away by blind zeal, he compelled those, who wished to serve God, to utter impious blasphemies, that he caused a variety of troubles for good and sincere people, that he voted for the shedding of innocent blood, and, finally, that he raised his horns against heaven, until he was thrown to the ground. But he does not spare his own character, but freely makes known his own disgrace, so long as the mercy of God may be revealed more clearly out of it. Accordingly no sinister suspicion could have clung to his speech, when, without regard for himself, and without being asked, he brings accusation against himself on account of things, by which he had obtained the praise and approbation of the whole people. Therefore he also condemns his mad zeal which others honoured. That makes it plain how disgusting is the vanity of those who are ashamed to make a simple confession, if they have committed any offence through ignorance or error. For although they do not exactly excuse themselves, yet they try to minimize or gloss over things, for which they ought to have asked for pardon with sorrow and tears. But when Paul could have retained the reputation of being a prudent man, he testifies that he was a maniac. – from Calvin’s comments on Acts 26:10, Paul before Agrippa.

Looking forward to learning more of the mercies of God in your series.

Blessings,
