I’m pretty sure he was referring to how wicked Dickens was. In particular to his wife. This was one of the posts Lucas had about his changing opinions towards him:

I might get busted by the moderator for bringing up something unrelated, but I just had that experience with David Copperfield. I loved the first half and then I wasn’t liking the second half as much. Then I learned about Dickens, and, by the time it was done, I was completely turned off.
