The flock taking the initiative to feed themselves is one thing, but it is a two-edged sword; what is a pastor, Reformed or otherwise, to do, when he is preaching the right thing in the right way, but his flock are busy casting their nets elsewhere for their Christian formation?
And on a related note, my guess is that the sheep are not beyond looking “off the premises” for pastoral care as well. Disclosure: at one stage, I was engaging with a professional counsellor for something I had to deal with, rather than my pastor, although this was with his knowledge and tacit blessing.
