This also has implications for our evangelism: in that we need to be upfront about the cost of following Jesus, particularly in terms of sanctification. And sanctification is hard work. When Jesus said, “count the cost”… this is surely part of it. Again, some CS Lewis:

… But the great thing to remember is that, though our feelings come and go, His love for us does not. It is not wearied by our sins, or our indifference; and, therefore, it is quite relentless in its determination that we shall be cured of those sins, at whatever cost to us, at whatever cost to Him.

This is why preaching the law is so critical for evangelism. 1) it shows why we need the gospel in the first place. 2) it sets up the stage for an ongoing (ie life-long) discussion about our sin. 3) it shows what we’re aiming at now for the gospel-regenerated/regenerating life ahead of us.
