Good Friday Preaching

Who’s holding a Good Friday service? What are you preaching?

We are, but I’m likely giving the sermon to one of my associates. He asked, and as Good Friday is one of my favorite services of the year, I thought I should be unselfish.

Not sure what he’s preaching. One year I preached Leviticus 16 for Good Friday. Loved that, though can’t speak for how helpful it was for the congregation.

After seminary I was pretty fed up with how commercial and over produced Easter was in the church I grew up in. Then I read there was something of a minor variance in the early church over those who celebrated Easter based on the Passover (supposedly derived from the apostle Peter’s practice) vs those celebrated Jesus’ death based on the date, 14th Nissan (supposedly derived from the apostle John’s practice).

John practice sounded better, more helpfully devotional to me. There was only one wrinkle: the only ones I knew of who do that today are the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Oh well…traditional Easter it is!

We are. 7 p.m. My text (I think):

”…and to Jesus,…to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel” (Heb. 12:24).

We have a Good Friday Service and I’ll be preaching on Isaiah 53:3, though I’m planning to read the whole chapter. We’ve had a number of miscarriages (including our own) and sufferings in our church and this description of the Messiah seems apropos. I will also be drawing on Hebrews 4:14-16, focusing on Jesus’ priestly work on our behalf.

Very sorry to hear about the miscarriage, brother. Trust God through this trial. I’ll pray for you.

As there are a number in our fraternity here reeling from disappointment and loss this Holy Week, praying the hope of the resurrection sustains you brothers and your families. Even in those dark three days when Jesus’ body lay in the tomb, even then he was not forgotten by his Father. May the truths we confess each Lord’s Day and each Easter bring you especial comfort this Lord’s Day and this Easter.

Late to the party,

I preached on Luke’s account of the crucifixion and focused on the fact we hate mourning, specifically that we have sanitized death, made sin meaningless because no one has sins on a death bed, and ultimately detract from the glory of the resurrection by saying “He’s just going to rise” like atheists due to minimize the resurrection.

We had Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. It was very sweet.
