Elder Adam Spaetti

My dear friend. I will miss him deeply. I thank God for Adam’s kind attention to my son, Jonathan. I can’t say for certain that Adam saved Jonathan’s life, but I can’t say for certain that he didn’t. What I do know is that the Bloomington ER doctors had spoken and were speaking with Adam and were very attentive to Jonathan. And I have been told by more than one doctor that had they started a blood transfusion only 5 minutes later than they did, we almost certainly would have lost him.

That speaks to Adam’s physical care, yet I have been the recipient of his exhortations, rebukes and encouragements as well. But, even more precious that this was his friendship. No muss, no drama, just kind and comfortable male friendship. I found myself scanning church for him without thinking this past Sunday when I thought of something that would interest him. Last night I had a dream that I was with Adam and then he died. I awoke and for half a second was overjoyed that it was a dream…only to realize that it was not. I spent the next 20 minutes silently crying and praying until God mercifully caused me to sleep again. I have tears streaming down my cheeks now as I write this.

I will miss Adam greatly. And yet, I trust in my Heavenly Father’s perfect care for me and Jonathan and Dawn and Cynthia and Sam and Mary and Olivia and Jed and Abe. May God raise me up as an elder to be as useful as Adam was. May God allow that all of us become this kind rock for those souls around us. Lord willing this will be (a small part of) the earthly, spiritual fruit of Adam’s life.

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things is passed away.”

Lord come quickly.
