Apparently the term comes from the Catholic Church; the advocatus diaboli was put in place to take a skeptical view of anyone being put forward for canonisation. The first formal mention of the role, according to Wikipedia, goes back to the early sixteenth century.
Never mind its origin, it’s an important role to have!
Didn’t we mention that in the podcast? Maybe we edited it out. Love,
It should be there. I heard it there first!
