167. The Crucible + A Streetcar Named Desire

I was going to skip these until I received an amazing copy with original artwork in the mail. I thought they were both pretty gripping.

I had a horrible attitude about reading The Crucible but I liked it better than I thought I would. Miller’s caricature of Puritans reminded me of Chesterton’s cheap shots at Calvinists: the blows don’t hurt because you don’t recognize the target. I think I’d make it a requirement for high school students. There were a lot of parallels between the story and some more recent/current moral panics (let the reader understand).
