Bayly's daily

Last month I was thinking a petition would be a good idea about that speed limit. I’m pretty shocked they changed it, but glad they did.

In Scripture, there are many cases of inspired ambiguity, so that translators have to decide whether it’s their job to remove ambiguity from Scripture, or whether and when to leave it intact.

Footnotes can indicate the possibilities, which is to say the ambiguity.

Those who read Calvin’s commentaries know how often he indicates the options, chooses one explaining why that is his thinking, then ends by saying he is fine with others choosing another option, and that he has no desire to argue about it.

But remember, this is in a commentary. This is not translation.

We have left ambiguity behind in choosing to use Bibles where scholars do their work aspirationally. Bibles today don’t honor God’s inspiration of Scripture, and particularly His inspiration of ambiguity—which is so constant across the holy text.

If it’s true that we are what we eat, then we are the preaching we sit under as well as the texts of sacred Scripture we read. Looking at fundamentalist Reformed men today, I think it’s easy to see they haven’t been eating or learning the lessons of Scripture’s Holy Spirit-inspired ambiguity. It’s been removed.

God often speaks obliquely. Let Him.

My life-defining news moments:

Pres. Kennedy’s Cuban Missile Crisis Address. Listening as little boy & being terrified. Dad was out of town.

Pres. Kennedy’s assassination.

Pres. Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

9/11.

2024 Debate between Pres. Trump & Pres. Biden.

Couldn’t help but pity the man, again and again.

But absolutely no pity for the puppet masters who have been helping him put on his cosplay while themselves exercising his office.

His whole term, they have been our shadow presidents, our éminences grises, and as President Trump said, it’s no wonder we are deep in two wars now, each or both of which could easily go nuclear.

Yes, and on a related note, an area where Scripture is obscure, no doubt deliberately: eschatology. The strong tendency of the dispensational traditions (Fundamentalism, notably, but Pentecostals are no different) to pronounce on the End Times, what I refer to as the Last Daze, is a strong case in point.

I once told my father, a now-retired Pentecostal pastor, that when it came to eschatology, I was a near-complete agnostic. That is, I believe(d) what it says in the Nicene Creed, that, “He will return in great glory to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom will have no end”. This is for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the unhealthy fear the topic engendered in me when I was younger.

Every media piece on possible substitutes for Pres Biden is careful to include a statement of the person’s advocacy of abortion. Nothing is more fundamental to Democrats than abortion. Always been this way. #nounionwithDemocrats

Good news. Tractor Supply announces, “We have heard from customers that we have disappointed them. We have taken this feedback to heart.”

They will stop submitting data to Human Rights Campaign (which promotes LGBTQ perversions). They also promise to eliminate DEI roles internally and get rid of their corporate carbon emissions goals.

They say they’re in the country, for the country. https://thehill.com/homenews/race-politics/4745958-traffer-supply-eliminates-diversity-climate/

Polish minister Radek Sikorski responds to Pres Biden’s debate performance: “It’s important to manage one’s ride into the sunset.” This is meaning behind rich choosing euthanasia/cremation. It’s all abt control.

Don’t try to manage your sunset. God is sovereign over life & death.

Be very clear abt this: LGBTQ pride is a thumb in the eye of God. The Creator of the Universe has declared sodomy an “abomination.” When sodomites and lesbians demand celebrations of their “pride,” they are opposing God. But He will not be mocked.

Not “pride.” Not “light.” Lesbians/gays coming out of closet to parade their shame is utter darkness. It’s impossible to take “pride” in what God has made shameful.

Christian witness will seek to restore shame. Shame is God’s grace leading to repentance. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/30/nyregion/nyc-pride-parade.html

Christians have become inured to LGBTQ vices. Leaving endurance behind, we now pity while our children embrace.

Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As, to be hated, needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace. -Pope

SCOTUS announcing Corner Post v Board of Governors just now, Justice Jackson reading her dissent from bench says, “Tsunami of lawsuits against agencies that the Court’s holdings in this case and Loper Bright have authorized has potential to devastate functioning of Fed Govt.” :raised_hands::tada::clap:

Limited and carefully circumscribed SCOTUS win for Pres Trump in Trump v. US. Excerpt:

“As for the dissents, they strike a tone of chilling doom that is wholly disproportionate to what the Court actually does today—conclude that immunity extends to official discussions between thePresident and his Attorney General, and then remand to the lower courts to determine “in the first instance” whether and to what extent Trump’s remaining alleged conduct is entitled to immunity.”

President Trump’s top adviser Steve Bannon told BBC he doesn’t fear going to prison. Says conversations he had with the president should be protected under executive privilege.

He’s right. Looking forward to Pres Trump obliterating his conviction. We’ve become banana republic.

The preacher is the man we pay to lie while the comedian is the man we pay to tell the truth. The preacher who tells the truth and the comedian who doesn’t tell the truth will both be fired.

Israel and Judah were nations whose God was the LORD. They were theocracies, so take a close look at the history of their religious leaders and rulers. I guess I don’t mind certain men trying to repristinate Israel and Judah’s Christian nationalism as long as they know what to expect.

Johns Hopkins Political Science Prof Steven Teles writing in The Chronicle of Higher Education: “Outside of economics, the percentages of conservatives in the social-science and humanities disciplines have dropped to the single digits… At my own university, Johns Hopkins, I would be hard-pressed to name a single tenured professor in the social sciences and humanities who is openly right of center in any reasonable understanding of the term.”

Comment: Christian higher ed is similar, but they hide it.

Note that Christian nationalists can’t even get elected as county dogcatcher. In counties with a population of 39,000. What are they thinking?

Move to their denominations’ annual meetings and no one elects them to lead there, either. Nor are they able to reform their CHRISTIAN denominations and churches. The only ones having any real fruit in that regard are our Dutch brothers of the Christian Reformed Church.

On this Fourth of July, let us all confess ourselves Christians who love our country and will continue to work for the establishment of God’s Moral Law across our states and nation. Yet what we work hardest at is the reform of our own selves and families and churches. This is how it has always been with God’s people. “Let judgment begin in the House of God.”

As for Christian Nationalism, it’s just Jerry Falwell 3.0
